Goldfish Mega Bites Cheddar Jalapeño Is a Yummy Cheese-and-Jalapeño Combo

Goldfish Mega Bites Cheddar Jalapeño crackers recently grabbed my attention because, well, cheese and jalapeños? Sign me up.

So I caved and bought them. And I have some thoughts: they’re pretty good and worth buying again! If you like jalapeño snacks with a little cheese flavor and only mild heat, these are worth a try.

Why I’m Picky About Crackers

First, a little context. I’m typically not that into plain crackers as a snack on their own. Saltines, Ritz, Carr’s Table Water Crackers—that whole world can be great with cheese, dips, spreads, or fun little condiment combos—but as-is they don’t usually do much for me. They tend to get a little pasty and uninteresting as I chew, and I’m rarely excited to keep eating them.

Flavored crackers are a little different. Some are great, but plenty are bland and still run into that same pasty-cracker problem. Cheez-Its are one major exception, thanks to the amount of cheese they contain. Some heavily seasoned crackers, like Goldfish Frank’s RedHot, can also escape boring-cracker territory.

Which brings us back to Goldfish Mega Bites Cheddar Jalapeño crackers. Oof, that’s a mouthful—how about just “Mega Cheddar Jalapeño Goldfish”? Still a mouthful…but slightly less so.

Cheese Helps, Jalapeño Leads

Thanks to a big dose of jalapeño flavor paired with mild but noticeable cheese flavor, these crackers escape the dullness of a simple cheese-flavored cracker.

Although the cheese flavor of Mega Cheddar Jalapeño Goldfish isn’t especially strong, it’s present enough to matter. This is important: without the cheese flavor coming through, these would just be jalapeño crackers, which would likely be significantly less interesting. For context, the cheesiness is about the same as regular cheddar Goldfish crackers.

This brings us to the jalapeño flavor: it’s big without being overwhelming. Too often, jalapeño flavor in packaged snacks ends up too mild and gets lost. Not the case with these Goldfish. 

These Goldfish also taste pleasantly crackery. This isn’t a major feature of the snack, but it’s worth mentioning because it adds a little more complexity.

A Little Heat Goes a Long Way

The jalapeño also brings a very light spiciness. That matters, because when jalapeño-flavored snacks lack heat entirely, they can end up tasting a little too much like green bell pepper. That’s not bad, but if I’m eating a jalapeño-flavored snack, I want jalapeño flavor—not bell pepper. 

Finally, as I’ve lamented in the past, too many jalapeño snacks are a little sweet thanks to the addition of sugar. Praise be, Pepperidge Farm had the wisdom to avoid adding sugar here. 

The Verdict: Worth Buying, But Not Hall of Fame

I’m not sure what makes the combination of jalapeños and cheese so delicious. That’s a mystery of the universe for another day. And, honestly, it doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that these Goldfish do a great job delivering that cheesy jalapeño combo. 

Overall, Goldfish Mega Bites Cheddar Jalapeño crackers come through where it matters most: noticeable jalapeño flavor, enough cheese to round things out, mild heat, and no unnecessary sweetness. They’re more interesting than a lot of flavored crackers, even if they could use a little more cheese.

This isn’t a dramatic snack revelation. As a Goldfish Mega Bites Cheddar Jalapeño review, though, the takeaway is pretty simple: these are good, flavorful crackers I’d buy again—even if they’re not Snacks Hall of Fame material. If Pepperidge Farm ever boosts the cheesiness, we could have a Snacks Hall of Fame contender on our hands.
